With broadening definition of sports of late, Bungee Jumping has become one of the very popular adventure sports. Nepal has, in that context, also embraced the sports for quite a while now inviting people from all over the world with its unique and spectacular bungee sites. It is thought that Nepal is probably the best destination for bungee jumping besides trekking and other adventures.
A three-hour bus ride to the north-east of the Kathmandu Valley leads you to Nepal’s first bungee jumping site, which is 160 meters over the wild Bhote Koshi River adjacent to the Tibetan border.
The bungee gears are thoroughly inspected and the remarkable 500-ft plunge (also considered as the world’s longest free-fall) is closely monitored as to make the sports safe and enjoyable.
Bungee Jumping at a glance
Location: About 3 hours drive along the Araniko Highway from the Kathmandu city center. Very close to Tibetan border.
The Gorge: The ultimate jump takes place on a 166-meter wide steel suspension bridge over the Bhote Koshi River.
The bridge: The Swiss-designed 6000-meter steel wire Bridge has a loading factor of 250kg per running meter with the capacity of holding 250 x 166 = 41,500kg or 4.5 tons. This longest suspension bridge of Nepal also facilitates local people to get to the other side of the gorge with an ease. This used to take some five hours before the erection of the bridge.
The jump: The 500-feet plunge is, no doubt, a true adventure in itself. If it’s in you, it’s there for you. Take a leap of your life. And you will have a story to tell your friends for life. Muster some guts and go gutsy.
The price: Nothing compares to what you get, really. Hopefully though, $ 75.00 a jump won’t burn a hole in your pockets. Note: 30% discount to Nepalese citizens.
Red Flag: Bungee Jumping may be tempting, but you have to be cautious before taking up the game if you have any of the following:
- Heart disease
- Epilepsy
- High blood pressure
- Pregnancy
- Addiction to alcohol or drugs
- Orthopedic problems
- Psychological problems
- Neurological problems
