With almost five hundred bird species in the Kathmandu Valley alone, Nepal boasts of over 848 species, close to 8% of the world’s total bird population. Some particular areas of Kathmandu Valley like Nagarjun, Bagmati River, Taudaha, Phulchoki and Godavari are ideal for bird-watching.

Nepal is home to many species of birds as the geography varies from low land Terai to high altitudes of the Himalayan range. Endangered birds like Impeyan Pheasant and Nepal’s national bird Spiny Babler, also make Nepal a unique bird-watching destination. In view of bird lovers from all around the world, we have put forth some of the exciting bird-watching tours which are as follow.

Day Activity

Day 01 Arrival in Kathmandu

Day 02 Swoyambhunath temple (Buddhist temple), Kathmandu Durbar Square and Patan tour

Day 03 Tour to Pashupatinath, Boudhanath and Bhaktapur

Day 04 After breakfast, drive to Phulchowki (2759m), 15km Southeast of KTM. Some 265 species of birds are said to have made this area their habitat. The birds include flycatchers, yuhinas, sunbirds, flowerpeckers, rosefinches, babbkers, warblers, tits, thrushes, minivets, woodpeckers, eagles and many migrant birds.

Day 05 Fly to Biratnagar and drive to Koshi Tappu, Sapta Koshi in Saptari and Sunsari districts of Eastern Nepal, one and half hours drive. The Reserve is home to a variety of wildlife including wild buffalos, hog deer, wild boar, spotted deer and blue bulls. Around 423 species of birds are believed to be in the reserve.

Day 06 Koship Tappu
Bird exploring throughout the day on foot and boat around the the Asia’s finest wetlands and fabulous bird watching area. Wildfowl, waders, storks, ibises, herons, egrets, tems and gulls and other land-birds like Swamp Francolin, Red-necked Falcon and Straited Marsh Wabler are noted to inhabit the area.
07 Drive Koshi Tappu-Royal Chitwan National Park.

Day 08 Drive towards Chitwan for about 10 hours. On the way, white-rumped Needtail Swifts and Ibisbills can be spotted. Chitwan National Park offers awesome flora and fauna with 450 species of birds and four species of deer, leopard, sloth bear, wild boar and other wildlife as well. One-horn rhino and Bengal Tigers are another specialty of this park.

Day 09 Jungle activities-Jungle walk, elephant ride, canoe ride, jeep ride for birds viewing followed by a cultural dance program performed by local villagers in the evening.

Day 10 One free day with activities as per your wish or you can cut short your visit and continue to the next destination.

Day 11 Chitwan – Royal Bardia National Park
Drive to the Bardia National Park, the largest and least disturbed lowland sanctuary in Terai densely forested and covered with grass and savannah and has the second largest population of tigers after Chitwan National Park. One- horned rhinos, wild elephants, swamp deer, black buck antelopes, crocodiles and Gangetic Dolphins are some of the animals that are found in the area. Endangered species of birds are the Bengal florican, lesser florican, silver-eared mesia and Sarus crane.

Day 12 Free day to explore Bardia. Jungle activities- elephant ride, nature walk, jungle drive, bird watching, trek to Churia Hills for more birds. Tented camp overnight.

Day 13 Another free day in Bardia with Jungle activities and cultural tour of Tharu village, observe Gangetic Dolphin andrafting in the Karnali river. Tharu cultural dance program in the evening.

Day 14 Drive about 2 hours to Nepalgunj to catch flight to Kathmandu. Overnight in hotel.

Day 15 Free day to spend in Kathmandu as per your desire.

Day 16 Fly back home with sweet chirps of memories.
